Anshin and Safety 2.0

 

IDEC aspires to become a company that pursues and achieves both Safety and ANSHIN (a sense of trust and assurance without any fear or stress) that are unparalleled in the world.

Since April 2018 when CSR Committee was established at IDEC, we have explored and promoted measures fit for various challenges through field-specific expert committees. This article explains about the activities of the Safety Promotion Committee.

 

 

1 Presentation

Since founded, IDEC has been committed to safety and raised corporate value constantly. And in the year 2020, we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the development of safety products.

Recent years have seen a dramatic change in industrial structure as a whole, not only in monodzukuri, due to technological advances such as IoT, Robot Revolution, and Connected Industries. In this situation, there is a need to add ANSHIN (a sense of trust and assurance without any fear or stress) to the traditional focus on safety.

This is an ideal opportunity for the safety products forerunner IDEC, which has approximately 90% of the world’s share of enabling switches, to take its corporate value to even greater heights. The vision held by the Safety Promotion Committee is for IDEC to be a company that pursues and achieves safety and ANSHIN unparalleled in the world, through the promotion of two concepts.

The first is a next-generation concept that IDEC leads the world in practicing: “Collaborative Safety - Safety2.0,” where people, machines/robots work in a collaborative manner to ensure both safety and productivity. Second, we seek to be ahead of the global curve in developing technologies, human resources, management and rule-making for “Vision Zero*”, which was established based on the recent global movement of Zero Accident Vision (ZAV).

 
*A global campaign launched by the International Social Security Association (ISSA) in 2017 as a movement to improve safety and health at work, conceived in Europe. This approach seeks to have the top management take the lead from safety, health, and well-being perspective, in order to prevent occupational accidents and diseases. IDEC is the first Japanese corporation to join Vision Zero.
 

 

2 Major Undertakings for FY2019

  • Developing equipment that achieves safety and ANSHIN, and improved productivity
     
  • Developing human resources capable of making proposals, and inspiring towards a society with safety & ANSHIN
     
  • Improving IDEC’s productivity through total commitment to occupational health & safety and safety of machinery
  • Deployment and development of Safety2.0 products such as Tokyo Sensor’s tape switches and explosion-protection products, in addition to interlock switches and other products for Safety1.0.

  • Conducting safety training for employees in Japan and abroad, and encouraging to acquire the Robot Safety Assessor qualification newly instituted in 2018, and which certifies personnel as having the knowledge and skill needed in the field of robot safety.

  • Establishment of a new Vision Zero Safety Promotion Department within the Manufacturing & SCM HQ, and  promotion of activity for acquiring the certification of ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management systems) (FY2019: Takino plant).

  • Strobe warning light to draw attention to the forklift.
  • Reinforced acrylic panel on the overhead guard to protect against falling objects.
  • Installation of a drive recorder.
  • Use of helmets.
  • Preventing accidents by limiting the top speed (5km/h)
